about

Ultracompact is a sleek, emotional, guttural, neon colored and cluttered collage of sound - Created by ambient and experimental artist Elijah Knutsen over a period of four months - Released under his Memory Color label

The self titled track; Ultracompact, starts the album with a heart stopping Jangle/Noise-Pop wall of writhing bass and pounding drums, nearly stressed to their breaking point by machine like guitar drones.

The plug is soon pulled, leading the album into it's melancholic lead single;

A Dream - a jaunty, "Wish-esque" tribute to lost love and sad relationships, simply produced, but lead by precise drums + bass through a wash of sad guitars and hazy vocals...

Track three; Superlilac, surprises as a soft, driving blend of Microsound, Jungle, and Breakbeat; a stuttering, electronic tangle, swirling through a chrome coloured jet-stream. Music for computers.

Track four; You Are the One - A long form Post-Rock plainsong. Shaking off the electronic dust of its predecessor, the "almost-cheerful" number explodes into a propulsive Shoegaze smear, with a drowsy bass track, and explosive guitar/drum section. Vocals are hidden somewhere inside as well...

Track five; No End in Sight; pulling the album into its (inevitable) depressive spiral, this Jefre Cantu-Ledesma inspired guitar piece paints a hopeless portrait of noise and repetition. Burning orange pillars of noise leave a feeling of beautiful melancholia as they slowly fade out.

Track six; Any sort of beautiful feeling is soon helplessly smothered by the lurching, ugly, mechanical, Slowcore giant that is The Drowning Machine. Guttural words reciting a mantra of self hate and death cut through a solid block of filthy, heavy-metal static. The eerie drums push on and on, through waves of ghostly guitar licks that layer endlessly on top of each other...

The final track; Goodbye; comes as a sweet release from the murky water of the previous track, and signals a fitting end to the album.

Although it was eclectic, crushing, sad, bittersweet, confusing, happy, cherished, intense, and whatever else you may have felt, in the end, it's better to have felt something than nothing at all...
